Hired in 1965 when our campus opened, Coach Hughes served as the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach for 17 years, as well as the Varsity Boys Tennis Coach for 27 years. He played a key role in the early beginnings of J.W. North High School and helped establish the culture of North's athletic program, which has been a source of great pride in our Eastside Community for 60 years. Former players consider Coach Hughes a mentor who modeled a coaching style of integrity and fairness by letting the best players play. He coached the first team at North to win a league title in any sport and qualified for the CIF playoffs in 10 of his 17 years, reaching the CIF Finals in 1978 and 1979, warranting the first two of over 30 banners placed in the gym representing athletic excellence. He will always be appreciated for providing opportunities for all athletes to succeed in life through involvement in sports. Coach Hughes was inducted into the North Hall of Fame in 2012 and will be inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame on May 5, 2025.
